NumberCruncher Networked Installations

The State Death Tax Manager (SDTM) is a separate program that is installed along with NumberCruncher (and Leimberg's Estate Planning QuickView) and is needed for calculations of state death taxes.

The installation routine for NumberCruncher allows the user to specify where the main program is installed, but the SDTM is always installed in the same place, a local directory "c:\Program Files\Leimberg\State Death Tax Manager".

For users with a site license who wish to install the NumberCruncher program files on a network drive, the following actions must be taken in order for network users to be able to have access to the SDTM:

  1. Run the installation program and, when prompted for a directory in which to install NumberCruncher, select (or enter) the network drive letter and directory where you want the program installed. For example, if the network drive is “z:” and there is a directory “Programs” for program files, you might choose to install the NumberCruncher program in “z:\Programs\NumberCruncher\”.

  2. After the installation is complete, you will find a new directory on the local hard drive, “c:\Program Files\Leimberg\State Death Tax Manager”. Copy all of the files in that directory to a network directory, such as “z:\Programs\SDTM”.

  3. In order to record the path for the SDTM program with the system registry (which is necessary for NumberCruncher to be able to find the SDTM when it needs it), each user must run the program once from his or her own machine. So, for example, if the SDTM files were copied to “z:\Programs\SDTM, each user would have to run “z:\Programs\SDTM\StateDeathTaxManager.exe” once to register the program. One way to do that would be to create a desktop shortcut that points to the SDTM program on the network, copy the shortcut to each user’s desktop, and then let each user run the program by clicking on the shortcut. Once a user does that, NumberCruncher will be able to find the SDTM when needed.

Network administrators who can distribute Windows registry settings directly to user machines can avoid the need for each user to run the SDTM program by creating and setting a registry key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Brentmark/State Death Tax Manager Leimberg/ApplicationPath" to the full path of the directory containing the program.

Users can check to see if the SDTM is properly installed by running NumberCruncher and going to the gift and estate tax computation (click on “Estate Tax” under the “Taxes” column on the main menu). The toolbar will have a “State Death Taxes” button on the right side, and clicking on that button should open up the SDTM. Within the SDTM, click on “Help/About” to make sure that it is the latest version, which is 1.70.

There are a couple of other network issues that may be of interest:

Help Files

There is a problem with a recent Microsoft Windows security patch because it blocks access to CHM files that are stored on a network drive. CHM files are HTML help files that are used with the Windows help system and they are the only file type now supported for use in Windows Help.

One solution to this problem is to allow users to copy the help files to their local hard drives, where they can be viewed normally. The NumberCruncher program can copy the files for the user if the user executes the “Help/Copy Help Files” menu choice.

We have also developed a utility that network administrators can use to alter the “ItssRestrictions” registration in order to permit the viewing of certain HTML help files across the network. Please send an email to support-east@leimberg.com if you would like a copy of this utility.

If the help files are maintained on a network drive, it may be necessary to tell the NumberCruncher program where the files are located. This can be done within the program by selecting “File/Location of Files/Help Files” from the program menu.

Data Files

By default, the program will save individual user data files on a directory on the local hard drive. If you wish to save data files on a network drive, select “File/Location of Files/Data Files” from the program menu.
